Eastern Barber
1872 · Oil on canvas
Dimensions 100.5 × 60 cm
Following a trip to the Middle East in 1868, Leon Bonnat began painting a series of paintings in the orientalist genre style. Bonatt's take on orientalism was in line with current trends in Paris which saw a shift from fantastic and exotic scenes replaced by more historically accurate depictions of everyday life. Originally titled "Turkish Barber" this painting depicts a turkish bath house where barbers traditionally worked their trade.
