Commissioned in 1910 by avant-garde art magazine publisher Eduard Kosmack in 1910 this painting is one of the larger painting done by Schiele in his early career. The piercing gaze of Kosmack is believed to be influenced by the subjects work as a hypnotist and the sunflower by his side a reference to an upcoming publication. The painting was never collected by Kosmack who failed to make payments and took off with a number of Schiele's small erotic drawings. The image for Eduard Kosmack has been made openly accessible by the Belvedere Gallery in Vienna, Austria where the painting can be seen currently on display.
