Garcia de' Medici
1550 · Oil on poplar panel
Dimensions 48 × 38 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
A half-length figure of García of Medici (1547-1562), third son of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosme I of Medici (1519-1474), and his wife, Leonor of Toledo (Ca. 1522 - 1562). The boy is portrayed at the age of three or four on a neutral background. In his right hand he holds an orange blossom and in the left, a small jewel like an amulet. Bronzino became the Florentine aristocracy's favorite portrait painter. With extraordinary technical skill, this painter excelled more at emphasizing the splendor of his sitters' social status than their psychology. He began working for Cosme of Medici in 1539, portraying both the Duke and his wife and children.
