Girl Weaving a Garland
1860-65 · Oil on canvas
Dimensions 41.9 × 29.8 cm
Collection: Doria Collection
This theme of a woman holding a garland was explored by Corot in at least four different paintings : "La Jeune Grecque drapée de blanc", which was also part of the Doria collection, "Couronne de Fleur", "Couronne de Myrte", and "Jeune Femme rêveuse tissant une couronne". These paintings are all delicate and graceful. The female figure can be interpreted as an evocation of inspiration, while the crown would represent the reward of creativity, although other interpretations can be made, such as the short-lived flowers representing both the beauty of the girl and the fleetingness of youth and life, or a representation of a coming of age. While the paintings has no bright colors, other than the humble flowers, the subject is well defined through a subtle use of shadows and delicate contrasts over an unassuming, undetailed background. This painting was part of the collection of Count Armand Doria, it is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New-York.
