Living on his family farm in Geneva, New York, from 1933 to 1938, Dove frequently drew and painted the local barnyard animals. The goat here is depicted not in naturalistic colors but in the tones of soil, foliage, water, and sky, making the animal seem part of the landscape itself. This painting was first exhibited in 1935, in the artists annual exhibition of new work at Alfred Stieglitzs New York gallery.
