Amongst Itō Jakuchū's favorite subjects were barnyard fowl. Here a magnificent rooster shows off his plumage to a hen which gazes at him in admiration. Itō Jakuchū was one of three Kyoto artists known as the "Three Eccentrics" who were known as much for their disregard towards traditional academic art as well as their perceived flamboyant social lifestyle though Itō was actually a very reserved and religious man.
