Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot

1850s to 1870s · pen and brown ink on paper

Dimensions 19.7 × 16 cm

Collection: Doria Collection

This sketch by Corot is unlikely to be an accurate view of anything, but was probably inspired by memories and sketches of Italy that the artist made during his trips there in 1825-28, 1834 and 1843. The dome could be that of St Peter in Rome as well as Santa Maria Assunta in Arriccia, a frequent subject in his painting and drawings. The dome, whichever it may be, is simply an element in this atmospheric composition. The subject matters less than the execution : this drawing is an evocation of Italy rather than a formal depiction. This artwork was in the collection of Count Armand Doria.
