Mt. Ktaadn
1853 · Oil on canvas
Dimensions 92.1 × 140.3 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
Shortly after Henry David Thoreau’s essay “Ktaadn and the Maine Woods”, Church traveled to the northern countryside of Maine to capture the "exceedingly wild and desolate land on canvas. Church took liberties by imagining a small population of people nestling into the countryside harmoniously without disturbing their beautiful surroundings. One man gazes forward from under a tree towards the mountainous skyline ahead perhaps dreaming of the great possibilities of the future.
