Neige fondante à Fontainebleau

"Melting Snow in Fontainebleau" based on a photograph possibly by Eugène Cuvelier, depicts dark trees contrasting over a bright sky and a white snow. While it may seem poor in colors at first glance, closer examination will reveal many nuances of blue, grey, white, purple, yellow, brown and even green coming together in a vibrant scene. Cézanne's visible brushstrokes, mostly aligned on a diagonal except in the case of the trees, increase the depth and give the impression of a changing light on the wet snow that seems to weigh on everything. While still a Winter scene, Spring is coming as patches of grass emerge where the cold mantel recedes. The Sun reflects on trees in the distance and bathes the damp atmosphere in an eerily warm light as it appears to force its rays through a dark web of branches, chasing the snow. This painting belonged to Victor Chocquet who exchanged it for "La Maison du Pendu", also by Cézanne, that had been bought by Count Armand Doria and which he wanted dearly. After the death of Doria, it was sold in 1899 and acquired by Claude Monet who had a deep, and reciprocal, admiration for Cézanne, before eventually arriving at the MoMa in New-York where it can be seen today. Ce tableau, basé sur une photo vraisemblablement d'Eugène Cuvelier, représente des arbres sombres contrastants avec un ciel lumineux et un sol enneigé. Au premier abord, les couleurs semblent absentes, mais un examen plus approfondi révèle un riche nuancier de bleu, gris, blanc, violet, jaune, marron et vert. Les coups de pinceaux, bien visibles et majoritairement alignés sur une diagonale ascendante de gauche à droite, excepté pour les arbres, donnent une impression de profondeur et de reflets changeants sur la neige mouillée et pesante. Bien qu'il s'agisse d'une scène hivernale, le printemps approche : des îlots d'herbes apparaissent là où le manteau neigeux se replie. Le Soleil dont on devine les reflets sur des troncs distants baigne la scène d'une lumière tiède et semble forcer le barrage d'un lourd réseau de branches noires, chassant la neige. Cette toile a appartenu à Victor Chocquet qui l'a échangée contre "La Maison du Pendu", également de Cézanne, appartenant à Armand Doria et qu'il désirait vivement. Suite à la mort de ce dernier, la peinture est vendue à Claude Monet qui vouait à Cézanne une grande admiration par ailleurs réciproque. Elle se trouve aujourd'hui au MoMa de New-York.
