Nolan's Fireplace
2016 · Newspaper Mosaic and paint on wood
Dimensions 91.5 × 122 cm
The inspiration for this piece came from my friend, Nolan, who inherited a stag's head from his grandfather and didn't have a fireplace to hang it over, so I decided to make him one. I began it in 2013 but didn't finish it until 2016 (I take very long breaks when working on these newspaper mosaic pieces). By the time I finished it, to give him as a wedding present, he no longer owned the stag's head as his bride is vegan and they lived in a very tiny house. All of the newspaper comes from LA Weeklys collected between 2010-2016. I leaned heavily on a bicycle theme, as Nolan is an avid cyclist. My favorite parts are the places where I used pictures of street art, especially Dabs & Myla, that the newspaper had featured because of a fantastic street art exhibit that was in LA in 2011 (Art In The Streets at MOCA). The original has never been shown in public before, as I need to build a frame for it. The vision is to have a frame that resembles the outside of a fireplace, including a mantel, so if you can figure out how to do that in this game, please send me a screenshot or tag me in chat (ainterestinguser)!
