The Cheat with the Ace of Clubs
1634 · oil on canvas
Dimensions 97.8 × 156.2 cm
Collection: Art Whisperer
Perhaps one of the greatest paintings of the 17th century The Cheat with the Ace of Clubs looks to have been heavily influence by Caravaggio's "Cardsharps" which introduced new playful themes to the 17th century art world. Georges de La Tour lived out most of his life in the duchy of Lorraine which was far removed from Paris and after his death he fell into relative obscurity with some of his paintings being miss-attributed to Caravaggio until the early 20th century when his works where rediscovered and coveted by collectors and museums throughout the world.
