The Plain

Influenced by Dutch painters, Georges Michel is consider a pioneer of outdoor painting which would later become a defining trait of impressionism. He was admired by Van Gogh, who would describe him as a master, and praised by others, even though his work isn't broadly known today. This painting, which can easily be compared to many landscapes of the next painters generation, is a good illustration of the role of the artist as a precursor. This painting was part of the collection of Count Armand Doria until 1899. -français- Influencé par la peinture hollandaise, Georges Michel est vu comme un pionnier de la peinture en plein air qui deviendra plus tard une caractéristique de l'impressionisme. Admiré par Van Gogh, qui l'appelait maître, et reconnu par d'autres, son oeuvre est cependant méconnue du public contemporain. Ce tableau, aisément comparable aux paysages de la génération de peintres suivante, illustre bien son rôle de précurseur. Ce tableau a fait partie de la collection du Comte Armand Doria jusqu'en 1899.
