The Reader
1882-3 · Oil on canvas
Dimensions 71.5 × 57.5 cm
Collection: Doria Collection
The Reader is a portrait of Marie-Joséphine Gareton, who Guillaumin would marry in 1887. The colors are soft and intermingled, dominated by the light pink of the clothes. Under the hat, we only see the lower half of the reader's face, she is fully absorbed in the small book she's holding and seems relaxed in this sunny garden. This painting was part of the collection of Count Armand Doria until 1899.
