The Spring
1856 · oil on canvas
Dimensions (80 x 163 cm)
Collection: Art Whisperer
The Spring was started in 1820 but was not completed until 1856 at the age of 76 with the assistance of two on Ingres' pupils. The composition of the Spring is very similar to what would be typically seen in a statuary which was very important in the Neoclassical movement of which Ingres was the leader of. Critics remarked about the blending of the ideal statuary beauty of the figure with the realism of the curves and soft skin textures. A perfect mixture of the idea and the real. The Spring can be seen at The Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
