Lissitzky began working under the influence of his mentor Kazimir Malevich who impressed upon Lissitzky the concepts of the Suprematism movement. With a more pragmatic approach towards art and the formal education of an engineer Lissitzky's work began moving into the directions of the De Stijl, constructivism and Bauhaus movements all of which he was an important figure.
