Cardinal and Nun thoroughly challenged acceptable social norms in art by questioning the moral decency of the catholic clergy. The composition intentionally leans very heavily on Shiele's mentor Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss" while also incorporating several of his own works. The nuns gaze seams borrowed from self portrait with Raised Bare Shoulder while the cardinals kneeling form mirrors an earlier painting of Schiele's lover Wally Neuzil.
