Painted in the year Egon Schiele married his wife Edith and broke apart from his long time lover model and muse Wally. Schiele had intended to remain romantically involved with Wally despite his marriage but she refused the proposition and they said their final farewells never to speak again. This painting is thought to be the painful goodbye to their powerful yet complicated and doomed relationship. In Schiele's depiction of women after his marriage with Edith and parting from Wally a noticeable change can be seen in a fuller and less desperate form. Death and the Maiden's image has been made available by the Belvedere Gallery in Vienna, Austria where the painting can be currently seen on display.
