This is a preparatory drawing for Millet's famous "Death and the Woodcutter", inspired by Jean de La Fontaine's poem "La Mort et le Bûcheron". Four slightly different compositions are shown on a single sheet, giving us a unique insight into Millet's process. It was part of the collection of Count Armand Doria until 1899 and is now at the Hermitage Museum. Ce dessin est une étude pour "La Mort et le Bûcheron", fameux tableaux de Millet inspiré de la fable du même nom de Jean de La Fontaine. On y voit quatre compositions légèrement différentes, ce qui nous donne un aperçu unique du processus créatif du peintre. Il a fait partie de la collection du Comte Armand Doria jusqu'en 1899 et se trouve à présent au Musée de l'Hermitage.
