1830 · Nishiki-e (錦絵, Woodblock print ink and color on paper)

Dimensions 36.5 × 25 cm

Collection: Central Saint Martins Museum & Study Collection: Japanese Actor Prints

The male actor, Iwai Hanshiro(岩井半四郎), dances softly with a fan in his hand and decorates the scene with butterflies, adding to the ornamental nature of the scene. From the pale foundation on his face and red lips, to the intricate ornaments in his hair, and the gorgeous kimono for theater. We can observe from the dress and make-up that this actor is playing a young and beautiful woman in the play. Behind the actors, a fancy green and red gradient curtain is arranged to make the actor's presence more spectacular. And the fine floral patterns on the characters' kimonos are evident in the composition of the painting as a whole, as is the emphasis on the use of bright colours.
