Tanbaya Otsuma (丹波屋おつま)
1859 · Nishiki-e (錦絵, Woodblock print ink and color on paper)
Dimensions 35 × 24 cm
Collection: Central Saint Martins Museum & Study Collection: Japanese Actor Prints
Male actor playing Otsuma(おつま) is sat next to a boat, with a river behind her, and a solitary white bird flying in the distance. (Maybe a line about depictions of nature?) In this particular print, the kimono is a light brown - possibly faded ink - but in other prints digitised online it is bright purple. The actor has elaborate ornaments in their hair and a traditional kimono, emphasising their performance of femininity. The actor also has a neutral facial expression, looking off to something in the play we cannot see.
