Iwai Kumesaburo as a court lady Sagami (岩井粂三郎 女房さがみ)

The actor Iwai Kumeraburo(岩井粂三郎) as Sagami(相模). The play is set against the backdrop of the Ichinotani Battle(一ノ谷の戦い) during the Genpei War. Sagami fell in love with Kumagai from from the Genji clan but she served to Fuji no Kata, a noblewoman belonging to a clan hostile to the Genji. Fuji no Kata showed sympathy and support towards them. With Fuji no Kata's assistance, the couple managed to escape from Kyoto and sought refuge in western Japan. They held eternal gratitude towards Fuji no Kata. Sagami, depicted in a kneeling posture, wore robes of gray, yellow, blue, green, and orange, with a blue and white undergarment. In this play, it can be observed that the female character gazes up at Kumagai with admiration.
