Portrayed in this painting is the artists lifelong friend Dr. Lluis Simarro Lacabra. While visiting his friend, Sorolla was greatly impressed by the observers and students which piled around the doctor while he did his research. Sarolla immediately took up his canvas and began working on the painting and he returned to the lab each night until it's completion.
