Mimasu Gennosuke as Tanizawa Mondo (三桝源之助 谷沢主水)
1832 · Nishiki-e (錦絵, Woodblock print ink and color on paper)
Dimensions 36.5 × 25.5 cm
Collection: Central Saint Martins Museum & Study Collection: Japanese Actor Prints
In this printed work, the Japanese drama Tsuru hitosuji kaga no fundai is being performed. The male actor who plays Takahashi Sakujuro kneels in the snow and opens the red wooden box in front of him. He is wearing a blue stripe with a knife and a maru crane pattern in the family pattern on his shoulder. The style of the box is exquisite, and there should be something important in it. Behind me is a scene of weeds, far from the crowd. The overall painting technique is relatively flat, with a cooler tone. The actor looked nervously towards another part of the work.
