Le Malade imaginaire (the Hypochondriac)

He is thrown back, pathetic, calamitous in his armchair, hands clinging to the armrests, shirt opened, head wrapped in a cap, mouth gaping, eyelids drooping. Near him, to the right, a table on which impotent cures accumulate. In front of him, to the left, the doctor in full regalia, red hairs, takes his pulse and, like a proper quack, worries him. The title refers to the last play produced by Molière in which the main character, Argan, a hypochondriac, spends much of his time being scammed by complacent and pedantic doctors. This painting was part of the collection of Count Armand Doria until 1899. It is now held by the Barnes Foundation. -français- Il est renversé, navrant, navré, calamiteux, dans son fauteuil, les mains à demi crispées aux accoudoirs, la chemise ouverte, la tête prise dans un bonnet à ruban bleu, la bouche béante, les paupières tombantes. Près de lui, à droite, une table sur laquelle s'accumulent les remèdes impuissants. Devant lui, à gauche, le médecin, en robe et rabat de docteur, les cheveux roux, lui tate le pouls, et, en bon charlatan, l'inquiète. Ce tableau a fait partie de la collection du Comte Armand Doria jusqu'en 1899. Il appartient aujourd'hui à la fondation Barnes.
