Le Premier Bain (the First Bath)
XIXth century · oil on canvas
Dimensions 43.5 × 53.3 cm
Collection: Doria Collection
On the right, sitting on stones, the mother and sister look attentively at the unfolding scene. On the left, the father, legs naked, trousers above his knees, with water up to his calves, lowers his little boy in the stream. The latter, fully naked, seems to enjoy the experience of this first summer bath that will allow him to splash around at ease. In the background, above, a man is walking away. This painting was part of the collection of Count Armand Doria until 1899. It is now at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
